Die Frau ohne Schatten (The Woman Without a Shadow), Richard Strauss'magical fairy tale opera, stars a pair of childless couples: a fairy-empress and her huntsman-emperor husband, and the poor dyer Barak and his grim wife. The ***ing cast includes a fantasy crew of spirits, secret messengers, and disembodied voices, all bringing to life a dreamlike landscape in a series of intimate vignettes.

The opera, which premiered in 1919, features a libretto based on an original

story by Strauss' frequent collaborator, Hugo von Hofmannsthal. The latter's gifts as a lyric and dramatic poet found a fortuitous match in the composer's genius as an orchestrator. Strauss brought the Wagnerian concept of leitmotif into its fullest flower, and his sensuous, passionate operas ventured into new territory in terms of dramatic intensity and psychological depth.

Most of Strauss' operas have enjoyed successful revivals, and Die Frau ohne

Schatten stands alongside Salome, Elektra, and DerRosenkavalier in critical and

popular acclaim. Strauss c***idered it "Hofmannsthal's finest achievement," and many regard it as Strauss' greatest work as well. This authoritative edition of
